Laser procedure transforms treatment for cataracts

What is a Cataract?

One of the most common, age-related, treatable eye health issues is cataracts. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), over half of adults will develop a cataract by 80 years of age. As we mature, we may notice that our eyesight slowly gets worse. This diminished vision makes driving, reading, and other everyday activities more challenging. We may be quick to accept that this is a natural progression of aging, but if you are over the age of 60 and experiencing vision problems, cataracts may be the cause.

A cataract is found in the lens of the eye. The lens is responsible for focusing any light that enters the eye on the retina. This is how we are able to process images. Over time the lens becomes cloudy. This occurs when the protein that makes up the lens becomes less fluid and clusters together. This protein mass can eventually produce impaired, blurry vision and lens discoloration. This process is what we call a cataract.

How Can You Delay Cataracts?

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent cataracts since it is a natural change in the eye. However, a healthy lifestyle is a good way to delay the onset of cataracts. A diet that consists of leafy greens, fruits and other vegetables is a great start. Also, protecting your eyes from the harmful rays of Florida’s strong sun with UV protective sunglasses can help with the onset of cataracts.

According to NEI, starting at age 60, you should have a “comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once every two years.” Early detection of cataracts can be helpful in making sure that your vision does not suffer.

If you have diabetes, previous eye trauma, or other health-related issues that make you susceptible to cataracts, the professionals at Atlantic Eye Institute will talk to you about your future eye care.

Surgery Can Help

If you have developed cataracts, surgery is the only permanent solution. Cataract removal is one of the most common surgical procedures in the United States. Historically, this procedure involves removal of the existing lens and replacing it with an artificial, clear lens.

The new LenSx Laser has transformed this traditional procedure. Using the most up-to-date technology and equipment, Atlantic Eye Institute will not only correct your cataracts but will also fix other vision problems like nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Why LenSx?

Believe it or not, cataract procedures have been performed since ancient Rome. Thankfully, cataract surgery has come a long way since then. Possibly one of the most significant advancements in cataract surgery is the use of the LenSx femtosecond laser. Here are a few reasons why this procedure may be the best option for you:

  • Bladeless cataract eye surgery is low risk
  • Less trauma to the eye compared to tradition surgery
  • More precise incisions
  • No need for sutures.
  • Better overall visual outcomes.
  • Corrects for small amounts of Astigmatism for crisp, clear vision
  • Quicker recovery time.

Living with cataracts can be daunting and even dangerous. With the LenSx Laser, the doctors at Atlantic Eye Institute can help you regain your vision and reclaim your life. Live your Vision today!
