Karim Jacob Samara, MD

A Jacksonville native, Dr. Karim Jacob Samara joined Atlantic Eye Institute in July 2013. He graduated magna cum laude from Boston University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts before returning to his home state of Florida to pursue his medical education.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville in 2002, followed by a complete residency in Internal Medicine in 2005 and a complete surgical residency in Ophthalmology in 2008—both completed at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Samara is among only a few physicians in the United States who are board-certified in both Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine allowing him to integrate his Internal Medicine expertise to manage complex eye conditions linked to systemic diseases.

During his ophthalmology residency, Dr. Samara gained extensive experience in laser refractive surgery, including LASIK and PRK. In 2007, he received his VISX Excimer Laser certification at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville and later became certified on the Allegretto Wavelight Laser System, which he currently utilizes. His training encompassed advanced cataract, refractive, glaucoma, and oculoplastic surgical techniques, allowing him to provide specialized care for patients with complex eye conditions, particularly those related to systemic diseases.

Before joining Atlantic Eye Institute, Dr. Samara served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the VA Hospital in Jacksonville, where he was the lead instructor for ophthalmology residents and fellows in surgical training. In addition to mentoring the next generation of eye surgeons, he performed some of the most complex cataract, glaucoma, and oculoplastic surgeries for veterans requiring specialized care.

Dr. Samara has advanced training in oculoplastic surgery, specializing in eyelid reconstruction, skin grafting, malignancy excision, ptosis repair, and blepharoplasty. He is frequently sought after for complex eyelid repairs and revision procedures. In addition, he offers minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, to help patients achieve a more youthful appearance.

He is also highly skilled in minimally invasive glaucoma treatments, including stent implantation, goniotomy, and canaloplasty, offering cutting-edge solutions for patients managing this condition.

Dr. Samara is honored to have performed cataract and eyelid surgeries on numerous fellow medical professionals and nationally recognized individuals.

Dedicated to serving his community, Dr. Samara actively volunteers with various community organizations, ensuring that underserved individuals receive the medical care they need. His compassionate approach reflects his commitment to improving the well-being of those around him.

Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Samara enjoys fishing, hiking, coaching youth sports, and spending time with his friends and family. He and his family are active members of their local Episcopal church, where they are deeply involved in community life.
